Organizing Your Scrapbook Paper

If there were one common denominator aside from their passion to scrapbooking, you would immediately know that theirs is the weakness on papers. From patterned and plain papers to unique cardstocks, we normally make use of the logic "buy the paper now and the inspiration will come after". And for the moment, your scrapbooking will lay scrap by scrap or page by page, waiting to be used.

If you don't have a photographic memory (which most of us don't have) it is best that you store you scrapbooking papers in more organized manners. Or else, you might find yourself lost with "out of sight, outs of mind" brain. You might already have a huge collection of paper stacks but not knowing it. A waste of an investment. And besides, it is always a good practice to get organized to really know what your resources are.

We can't forever buy papers and store them in disarray. And buy another set and go on with that same process. Somehow, clutter must stop.

We cannot exactly provide you with strict guidelines of storage. In scrapbooking, so long as the methods fits you, it will work. Let's move out from the box and do our own things in our own ways.

We have covered some general techniques here, which you may apply. Only you have to fill in the gaps if you require some modifications.

Most scrappers find it hard to know their organizing style. In general, you have two options. One, that is horizontal stacking and the other, vertical. It ill always be your preference to choose. There is no best way for everyone and you can do whatever fits your case.

Most stores keep their papers in horizontal stacking, either by racks or by shelves. This is largely because they are equipped with much space to work with. Unfortunately, most of us don't have that enough space so the best solution would be to furnish snap top cases for better organization. Not only are these cases great for paper stacking, they also work well for storing other scrapbooking materials that you normally or presently use.

If you have no other option but to store your papers in horizontal formats, you may always try using vertical solutions.  Storing papers vertically works best for cardstocks and for papers that you often use. Storage papers for vertical positioning normally comes with dividers, thus the capacity to store multiple files all at the same place. Just be reminded though that this method will require you tall shelves.

Second, you must know what kind of scrapbooker are you when it comes to shopping papers. There are again, two types. One, the organized people and the other are those that adhere with any-thing-goes principles.

The organized group are those buyers ho take time to bring with them photos and memorabilias as reference for when buying. They browse aisles by aisle and choose specific types of papers according to their immediate needs, matching their choices with the materials that they have.

And these people will most likely gather sample die cuts and embellishments and stick-ons for each planned page. Thus, they tend to choose the right pieces together for their possible layouts. At the end, they will collect other stiffs that will match their themes.

The unorganized group though is the exact opposite. They arrive at the store with hardly an idea to focus to. They would grab random kinds of scrapbooking papers depending on what catches their eye. While tossing cool and pretty papers, they would soon realize that the cardstocks at the next eye "might" be of future use. Lastly, they'll run to the register and the whole thing is over. Once they start the project, they'll soon discover that several things are missing.

The second attitude is easier to do, however you must learn to accept the risks. The first one obviously will require you to plan prior to shopping but will create lesser chances of committing mistakes. If you are dealing with scrapbooking papers, it will always prove best to choose the latter one.

Organization of papers will require you to pay attention to details. The more chaotic your files get, the more attention you will have to invest. It is far less time consuming in the end to start organizing stuffs and keep things that way than to organize and reorganize over and over again. Besides, when your papers are arranged, you would have better pictures of what are available to you and you will be able to work on them better.

Making Journaling pieces for my scrapbooks?

I have all this spare paper from one of those one-pound scrap packs that I want to use to make journaling pieces as well as a bunch of nice patterned paper in varying sizes and colors. Any ideas and advice is helpful and welcome.
I'm trying to reduce my clutter and save money instead of buying the pre-made stuff.

Scrapbooking – Organize a Special Room

Such people eventually reach a point where they begin to despair, and question how to organize a scrapbook room. They don't want to give up the craft, but it takes so much space.

Perhaps you find yourself in the same predicament. Maybe you are wondering how to organize your scrapbook room.

How to Organize a Scrapbook Room

Wondering how to organize a scrapbook room, you may have started sorting supplies into separate boxes. That kept them organized, but not readily accessible. Also, the scrapbooking tools weren't in boxes.

Perhaps these suggestions will help.

Divide a scrapbook room into two areas. The first area will be for working on scrapbooks. The second will be for storage.

1. Work Area: This area will need a scrapbooking table or desk. The scrapbooking work area should be large enough to hold a large album, papers, photos, other elements, and tools. If you enjoy working with other family members or friends, select a scrapbooking table that provides space for 3 or 4 workers. Provide comfortable chairs for your scrapbook room so that your back is supported while working. Good lighting is also essential in a scrapbooking work area. Add a big wastebasket!

2. Storage Area: Adequate, organized storage in a scrapbook room will make your work easier and keep your supplies fresh and clean. There are many ways to store scrapbooking supplies. You can purchase furniture made especially for scrapbook rooms. Scrapbooking desks offer drawers of various sizes to fit the most common supplies. Scrapbooking paper storage units are often similar to those used in large offices. Clear plastic bins that stack are very useful. You will need different kinds of storage for different products so they will stay organized.

Once you have divided your scrapbook room and acquired the necessary furnishings, it is time to organize things.

Scrapbooking albums are probably your largest items. Keep them on a bookshelf where you can easily select the one on which you want to work. If you have more than one size, arrange them by height to give your scrapbook room an organized look to go with your organizational efforts. If you have idea books or instructional books on scrapbooking, put them on the bookshelf. Magazines can be stored there, too. Magazine holders from am office supply store will keep them tidy.

Scrapbooking papers and cardstock are the next largest items. These can be organized in a Paper Station such as scrapbooking stores use. Or store them in clear stacking plastic bins. Sort all of your papers and get them safely out of the way before moving to another scrapbooking element.

Sort your paper and cardstock in a way that fits your creativity. Some people sort by color, placing all blues in one location, yellows in another, etc. Others prefer to sort according to occasion. Papers related to nostalgic themes go together. Papers that fit a sports theme go in another storage bin. Baby scrapbooking paper goes in a third.

Once papers are sorted and put in storage bins or drawers, label the bins so that you will know at a glance what is in each.

Kits should be stored separately from your paper and cardstock. Your scrapbook room might have a dedicated box or drawer just for kits. Keep them in their wrappers if you want to be sure you have all the pieces when you are ready to use them. Label your kit box or drawer.

Ribbons can tangle and fray if not stored properly. Invest in a ribbon holder for your scrapbook room – more than one if you have a lot of ribbons. Make sure each roll is tidy, and store them on the ribbon holders. You may want to organize these by color also. If you are putting them in a box or drawer, attach a label.

Your scrapbook room is probably looking better by now. The small things are left, though, and they can cause clutter. Take time to sort through all of the stickers, embellishments, eyelets, brads, and other items. Once they are sorted, place each in an appropriate drawer or box, and label them. A scrapbooking desk is especially convenient for these small items. Its many drawers and nooks will soon have the scrapbook room well organized.

One essential in a scrapbook room is a place for tools. If they are on your table or desk, you may not have space to work. Put them away.

Scrapbooking Crafts-Make this Personalized Book Marker Using Easy to Find Wrapping or Scrapbooking Paper

Are you or someone you know an avid reader?  Try making a personalized custom book marker so you’ll never lose your place.  You can make several of these in no time at all using cardboard and antiqued looking wrapping paper.  What a quick way to create art with decorative scrap paper and your own personalized 3-D foam letter, as you’ll find out by reading below.

Begin by selecting a scrap piece of wrapping paper that resembles time gone by.  If you don’t have any left over wrapping paper, you can find some very inexpensive paper at your local craft store.  For this project an antiqued looking sports theme was used in a flat finish. (tan, brown, black and olive)  Using scissors cut the wrapping paper in to two 8â€H x 2â€W strips. Next, cut one piece of thin scrap cardboard in to an 8â€H x 2â€W piece to match in size the two strips of paper you’ve already cut and set aside. Spray Artist Adhesive to one side of the cardboard and apply one of the wrapped paper strips to it, smooth out any wrinkles and allow time to dry, approx. 5 minutes. Next, flip the quickly to be finished custom book marker over and repeat the same process on the other side.  Now, to add the personalizing touch to your project, add a 3-d foam letter sticker for scrapbooking to the front side of your marker. For this project we used a cream colored S letter, 1.5†x 1.5â€.

That’s all there is to it.  A nice simple craft, and a special and personalized custom book marker. A great classroom craft for teachers, or just the rest of us everyday home crafters.     

Supplies:

• Decorative scrap wrapping paper (Flat finish)
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Artist Spray Adhesive
• 3-d Foam letter sticker for scrapbooking (One letter, size 1.5†x 1.5â€)

Can you help a novice scrapbooker?

I have never scrapbooked before but I have decided to make my daughter a scrapbook of memories (hers) for her 21st birthday in September, I hope I've left enough time.
I have bought a lush 12x12 inch album and a set of fusion papers and fibres from basic grey, but where do I go for advice from here? I could probably put something nice together without help but if anyone can recommend any ideas for a novice eg books, magazines or web sites it would be greatly appreciated. I am in the UK.

Your local library will probably have books and maybe videos/DVDs on scrapbooking. If you have a local craft shop selling scrapbooking materials ask them about workshops or groups in the area. Other scrapbookers will be only too pleased to give help and advice and if you work with a group you can share tools and buy small oddments if they have something just right to go with one of your photographs.
createandcraft and qvc are on Sky and the Internet 24 hours a day but you may have to spend too much time watching for something relevant to be worth it and they are trying to sell you stuff.

There are at least 6 monthly scrapbooking magazines on the market. They have good ideas but again you may not find anything relevant.

Finally if you have to go it alone I would invest in a good book.
Le Nae's Scrapbooking Basics from Hot Off the Press HOTP-2326 could be a good one for you as she is a busy working mum so hasn't got time to get too fancy. You would get this book from a craft shop or on the internet. If you a near a Waterstones go to the craft section, get a selection of scrapbooking ideas books, sit down on the couch and pick one or two with layouts that appeal to you.

Remember layouts are only a guidline - your photo should determine the colours and embellishments you use - you probably wont be able to get all the sheets and items used anyway. The most basic thing to do is to mount your photo on a piece of paper or card which complements the photo and the background sheet. This gives the photo a border which immediately gives it more ooomph. Ruthlessly cut away any parts of the photo which are not relevant - use copies if you don't want to use originals. You can cut in circles, ovals, heart shapes, make decorative edges with scissors. Tear strips of papers and stick them across your pages. The joy of scrapbooking is that the possibilities are limited only by your own imagination.

Honeymoon scrapbook albums can be fun to make, even if you have never tried one before. Tropical scrapbook albums also are exciting. When one combines the best of tropical scrapbook albums and honeymoon scrapbook albums, the results can be amazing. But how do you make scrapbook albums?

Let's look at the steps.

How to Construct a Scrapbook Album – Step 1

Scrapbook albums come in a range of materials, sizes, and styles. The first step in constructing scrapbook albums is choosing the album itself.

1. Materials: Leather scrapbook albums are likely to be the most expensive. Honeymoon scrapbook albums are precious, however, and you may want to choose durable leather for yours. Cloth-covered scrapbook albums are also a good choice. Some have a window opening on the front cover for a special photo. The cloth used is usually book cloth, so it is strong. Cheap scrapbook albums are also available. These are usually made of heavy cover stock, plain or covered with paper.

2. Sizes: Standard scrapbook albums have a useable page size of 12x12 inches. The scrapbook album itself may measure 13x14 inches or more, but part of that is the book's spine. Some scrapbook albums are larger – as large as 18x20 inches. Smaller scrapbook albums are as small as 4x6 inches. As a novice, you may want to select from the standard scrapbook albums, since scrapbook supplies are made to that standard.

3. Styles: As the popularity of scrapbooking has increased, the variety of styles in scrapbook albums has mushroomed. Plain cover scrapbook albums come in many colors. Some scrapbook albums have a military-themed cover, featuring the military branch and a gold plated service medallion. Others have a Disney theme, with Mickey Mouse and friends adorning the cover. Tropical scrapbook albums, which you might choose for a honeymoon in Bora Bora, would be attractive in scrapbook albums with a bright red or blue Hibiscus-patterned cloth cover. You might even find unique Bora Bora scrapbook albums.

Once you have selected a scrapbook album, you need to sort the photos and memorabilia you will use. Pay attention to the theme of each piece as well as the colors.

After you arrange and affix the photos, it's time to add journaling. "Journaling" is nothing more than notes or captions that help explain the photos. You may have a memory of what was said when a certain photo was taken – or a comment about what happened immediately before or after. Journaling can be done on small pieces of paper that are added to scrapbook albums much as photos are added.

How to Construct a Scrapbook Album – Step 7

The final touch in constructing scrapbook albums is to add embellishments, charms, stickers, and other small pieces that add interest. Honeymoon scrapbook albums might include small hearts or kisses. Bora Bora scrapbook albums, or other tropical scrapbook albums, might include small sandals or seashells.

The Easier Route!

If construction of scrapbook albums "from scratch" sounds too complicated, or too time-consuming, you may want to purchase a scrapbooking honeymoon kit!
