Anyone that wants to make great wire work jewelry needs to have the right tools. Many newbies to jewelry making -- and even some of us who have been doing this for awhile get a bit intimidated when it comes to the world of tools. Some jewelry makers actually get a bit stubborn, and attempt to make one single tool work for every possible configuration. It just doesn't work! You really do need a variety of tools for best success.

Here's my best beginners' tool list (and a frugal minded one at that) for wire work jewelry:

* The most important first: your pliers- flat-nose, chain-nose, round-nose

* A good quality pair of side flush cutters

* A good, smooth steel plate (this is a terrific substitute that is less expensive than a steel bench block)

* A hardware store hammer

* A small nylon or rawhide mallet

* A flat file (can find this at either the hardware store or a hobby store)

* Fine steel wool (for cleaning and polishing)

These tools will help you master wire work jewelry and create many beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Now that you know what you need, you might be wondering where to get these things. Here are some tips so you don't waste your money:

Tip #1:

Great tools can be found at the hardware store. "The hardware store?" you may ask, "that's where the light bulbs and ladders live." But no my little chickadee, you can find some of your jewelry making tools at the hardware store. Remember that you'll be working with wire and that wire is stiff and hard. It makes perfect sense that your perfect tools would live at the hardware store, just waiting to be found. Get a hammer, flat file, steel wool and a nylon mallet -- all at the hardware store! Best of all, often your hardware store jewelry making supplies will be less expensive than traditional craft store supplies!

Tip#2

Pay for quality so you don't pay for mistakes. This may seem funny to say after tip #1, but there is a time to spend the money. Here's where to spend your money: pliers. Never EVER get your pliers from the hardware store. Here's here you need to splurge on the specialized stuff.

It seems like many wire work jewelry makers scrimp a bit on their pliers (been there, done that!) so they have extra money to spend on supplies. But this is just like charging something on your credit card so you don't pay cash: not really a great bargain. You need quality pliers to see you through every wire work jewelry-making project that you do. If you purchase the cheapie pliers, you'll soon have trouble getting them to perform for you. There is nothing more frustrating than working on a great piece and having your tools not work as well as you do. The key to cutting costs is to know when - and pliers ain't the place to save. When it comes to pliers, you're wise to purchase quality tools that keep up the pace!

Tip #3:

Wire work jewelry making kit tools can be a great deal. But you do need to investigate exactly what is included in that kit. Many craft kits are created so they can be given as gifts or purchased by a beginner who may not completely understand what they need. We've already talked about exactly what tools you need. So if you see a wire work tool kit that includes lots of great pliers and a hammer or other tools for a top-notch price, then that is a good deal. But if it doesn't have the above tools and includes different types of tools then it is created for doing different types of jewelry and will not be useful for what you want to do.

Wire work jewelry making is very dependent on having the right tools. The more informed you are about your tools -- the stronger your jewelry making skills become.

How do you make plastic model kits look destroyed or crashed and smashed up?

I am a fan of building plastic model vehicles, like cars, trucks, and military craft. You remember these models as a kid - playing with the X-Acto knife and the dizzying model glue. I like to make models look as authentic as possible, but I would like to make some of them look crashed or junky...how would I go about doing this? How do you take a completed model and turn it into a junkyard creation?

Meet mr hammer, but for a second we're going to pretend he's a WWII AA turret.

Making crafts can be fun. There are many kits available to make this an enjoyable activity for everyone.

Some of us just got the notion in third grade that since we weren’t the best artist in the class that we weren’t “the creative type.” The Creative Type: a mysterious individual with messy hair and outrageous attire who frequents museums and the theatre and mutters tirelessly to him/ herself when in public. As legendary as Santa Claus—and just as fictional. Real creativity manifests itself in a myriad of different ways. Creativity is that urge that makes you want to move the furniture around, for the third time this week. Creativity is the calm that comes over you as you chop vegetables for tonight’s dinner. Creativity is the tickle of excitement you get when you find a new scenic route to work. As humans, we have a basic need to express ourselves, and how we express ourselves is creativity.

A Short History of Crafts

Crafting has gone in and out of fashion over the last few decades. In the 1940s crafting was done out of necessity. Because of WWII, making do and using up what you had was a respected form of patriotism. Middleclass women made quilts from their family’s old clothes, and their children used catalogues or ads to make paper valentines or Christmas cards. Worn out sheets were made into pillowcases, then into handkerchiefs, and eventually used as rags. There were not the malls open in the evening as there are today, nor were there the myriad forms of entertainment to be had, so people stayed home and worked needlecraft or baked.

This mentality continued throughout the forties and fifties, but as the war generation aged crafting changed. Crafts were something you made in your leisure time. Since crafting was traditionally a women’s activity, it was tied to domesticity and subordination. As the women’s liberation movement entered the scene, crafting was looked down on as anti-progressive. Mass produced clothing and other articles made sewing virtually obsolete.

Crafting Today

Today is a new movement, present even among the very educated, wealthy, and politically progressive. Betsy Greer coined the term craftivism, a call to shrug off the plague of mass produced goods available, in turn for an appreciation of all things unique and handmade.

Many still ask why, when it is cheaper, faster, and more convenient to pick up this or that dust catcher at your neighborhood Wal-Mart, why would anyone pick up a needle? The answer is manifold.

Some craft because the activity creates satisfaction and gratification in a way that few other forms of entertainment today do. They enjoy both the process of creating as well as the finished product. There is a certain amount of pride and confidence felt when using something made with one’s own hands—whether it is a bookshelf or a crocheted dishcloth. And then there are the crafters who do what they do for no other reason than that crafts are fun.

Perhaps others craft for their health—although they may not realize it. Crafting has a very positive impact on one’s mental health, as it engages the mind in creative and imaginative problem solving, as well as the hands. Psychologists and therapists have taken note, and many nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals offer craft classes as a potent form of recreational therapy.

Crafting has also created its own community, which is a huge draw in our isolated society. Whether you scrapbook or throw pots, there is likely an association in your city where you can join with other like-minded individuals to craft regularly. This feeling of community extends even within one’s own family. Many parents now schedule a regular arts and crafts time with their children. This is time well spent—crafting with children builds important practical skills as well as interpersonal bonds.

Building a model of the globe theatre?

For a project on Shakeshere, my teacher is allowing us to choose what to do according to our interest. Mine is architecture, and although drawing this in revit or on paper is cool to me, i want to build a model because i think the class will like it more. My options are to buy a whole bunch of materials at a craft store or build it out of legos. One person built a lego model on YouTube and used a program to design it. Is there any way I can get the same kit he designed. Also, if you have any advice to give, I would appreciate it. Money shouldnt be too much of an issue because my teacher gives her students money for projects. Thanks for your help.

Simply go to a Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. and pick up a free phone.  Then have your kids added to your plan. This typically costs only $10 a month. Cheap! Do check to make sure that you either have unlimited minutes on your plan or the ability to limit the kids’ talk time. It takes one $400 cell bill to realize that you have made a mistake. Nip it in the bud and impress the pants off your kids. If you are not the parent, however, please check with the parent before giving such extravagant gifts.

Unique Discount Store Gifts

Big Lots, Tuesday Morning, Ross and others offer brand new unique toys and clothes from name brand companies for wildly inexpensive prices. If you want to get unique, inexpensive gifts for kids but do not want to compromise on quality, this is the way to go. Most of the stores carry overstock from department stores and the benefit to you is great.

Whichever inexpensive, unique gifts you choose to get the kids in your life just remember, kids easy to please so don’t fret too much.

Stork Craft crib recall - safe with repair kit?

Do you think the cribs will now be safe for our babies once we have "fixed" them with the repair kits Stork Craft is sending out?

I am still using mine now (my daughter is too young to roll so she isnt going anywhere) and will still use it after I get the kit. I keep a good eye on my daughter. I check on her often in her sleep and if I'm not in hearing range I use a monitor. If she is stirring then I check on her so I'm not concerned. I also inspect her crib daily to be sure everything is still tight and in place and not broken. I am not about to go out and buy a whole new crib when that too could be recalled in the future and chances are, my crib will be fine.

How to Come up With a Craft Idea for Kids

First, lay aside any perfectionism.  Locking yourself into thinking there is only one right way to do something makes every decision harder.  Regardless of the kid program you are helping with, there are always many suitable craft ideas out there.  Don't worry about picking the wrong one!  If you've taken into consideration the age and skill levels of the kids involved, your choice will be adequate.

Next, consider your budget.  When choosing a craft idea for kid programs, you need to be aware that some of them are expensive.  Prepackaged kits to make a fun foam picture frame or a craft stick cross are affordable for a few kids, but if you are needing to do a craft with a lot of kids, these kits might cost too much.  It's often easy to do almost exactly the same project by just looking at the craft kit components and buying the same materials in bulk at the discount store.  You may have to do some preparation, like cutting out shapes ahead of time, or at least making cardboard patterns for the kids to use in cutting out their own.  The savings will be worth it, however.

Another consideration is this:  in spite of years of indoctrination from women's libbers, the fact remains that boys and girls like different sorts of crafts!  If the craft seems a little girly, don't use it at boys' camp.  Stick with lace-up leather billfolds, Indian artifacts, dinosaur art, and similar projects.  Girls will like beads and anything that's pink or purple.  For a craft idea for kid camp where there are kids of both sexes, keep it on the boyish side and provide some pink materials to keep the girls happy.

An aspect of creativity that the non-creative types don't realize is that ideas spring from other ideas.  That is, if you look over a book or website of craft ideas, maybe none of them will appeal to you, but if you let them, they will spark an idea for a similar project.  Use what you can and change what you must in the craft directions.  For instance, the craft may have a slogan to be written across the front.  If you need to change the slogan to fit your own needs, it's perfectly OK.  For instance, the pictured project might say "Girls rock!"  You can change that to "He is the Rock!" if that meets your VBS needs better.

A final suggestion is to realize that you don't have to change the instructions or create something new to have a good craft idea for kid use.  Feel free to follow the instructions to the letter if that works better for you.  The kids will have a great time either way.  Just pick a craft idea, for kid creativity beats adult creativity everytime!  The kids will make it creative, even if you have doubts about your own ability in this area.

Wal-Mart is a good bet. Or I suppose the American version is K-Mart? or Zellers? I don't know. But any of those big stores have large amounts of craft stuff. Depending on what you want to make, you might have to buy the parts separately, but you'll save money not buying from specialty craft stores.

How do you make crafting stamps at home?

I am an artist who has recently gotten into card making and I am having a really hard time finding specific stamps. I would like to make quality stamps at home (no carved potatoes). I also don't want to spend $500 on some machine or kit. Does anyone know if this is possible?? If it is, how would I do it?? Thank you for your help!!

You can have quite detailed rubber stamps made online, or at rubberstamp companies in your area (if you live in an urban area, look in your yellow pages under Rubberstamp makers). And it's so fun that you may have found a new addiction . As an artist (or just a human being) it can be a whole new way to be creative and/or have some quite useful stamps for all kinds of purposes.

There are various online companies that make stamps but I like the one called Ready Stamps (not Ready Stamp which is a different company) because all the money goes to the Cerebral Palsy Association and many of the workers are themselves disabled.
They do a great job, it doesn't take very long, and it's quite inexpensive for what you can get back imo.
