There are lots of reasons to write a craft book. For some, it's fulfilling a long held dream simply to write a book. For others it's a desire to share what they've learned and help newcomers to the craft.

Others have a more commercial approach. They're craftspeople but they're also business people and they realise the potential income writing a craft book can bring. What's more, once you've established that income it will keep on coming for years and years, with remarkably little work required from you to maintain it.

In the traditional book trade, it's called royalty income. In the more modern online craft book publishing world it's usually called residual income.

And very nice it is too!

In case your new to the concept, basically you put the effort into writing and publishing a craft book and getting it ready for sale, then the system is more or less automated. You don't get huge bundles of cash coming in but you get a percentage of each sale. Every time your craft book is sold, you get a residual income.

In traditional craft book publishing this would be in the region of ten to fifteen percent of the cover price. If you write a craft book today and publish it using digital delivery you might expect to get as much as ninety percent of the cover price!

You shouldn't let the concept of digital delivery put you off either. It's new terminology perhaps but it's neither complicated nor difficult to do. Several companies exist who'll do the lion's share of the work for less than 5% commission. What's more, there are no up-front fees, you only pay them when your craft book sells!

Suddenly, in a relatively short space of time the idea of writing a craft book isn't just a pipe dream but a practical, achievable reality for craftspeople everywhere.

Once set up, that initial energy and effort you put into writing a craft book is rewarded again and again. Every copy that sells puts money in your bank. This week, next week, next month, next year!

And what do you need to do to maintain it? You'll probably have to answer a few emails, a few questions from potential customers. A couple of hours a week maybe.

There has never been a better time for you to write a craft book. There has never been a better time to profit from it. There are also other indirect ways that writing a craft book can benefit you.

If you've been a crafts person for some time - regardless of the level you think you're at - you have valuable knowledge. Knowledge that other people will gladly pay for. All you need to do is write it down and become your own craft book publisher!

Before you think that's too simplistic an answer, or even a bit sarcastic, let me assure you that is not my intention at all.

You see the age-old barriers to publishing your own craft book are gone. Not only can you use the hugely profitable method of digitally publishing and delivering online but even if you chose to go the traditional printed soft or hardcover route there are print-on-demand specialists who will happily produce just one or two copies of your craft book at very reasonable rates.

Not so long ago if you wanted to publish a craft book you'd have to jump through many, many hops - and for not a lot of reward. First you would have to find an agent (approaching publishers direct was usually unsuccessful). After convincing your agent that the book had merit you'd then have to trust that the agent could find a publisher.

Traditional publishers are notoriously difficult to convince, and not surprisingly. They would have to make a serious investment in pre-production and advertising before they had any chance of showing a profit. Many, many good craft books ended up not getting to press simply because the numbers didn't add up.

If you managed to survive the cull then twelve months or so later you might start seeing some royalties. Around ten to fifteen percent of the cover price.

Very few people got rich writing a craft book.

Now all that has changed. Digital craft book publishing is a reality and dozens of craft books that might never have seen the light of day are now being published by the craftspeople themselves. You don't need an agent, you don't need a publisher, there are ways of marketing your craft book that are zero cost.

The result is not a paltry 10 or 15% but profit levels as high as 90% of the cover price.

Of course there are bound to be other barriers, aren't there? Surely it can't really be that easy to become your own craft book publisher?

Well the only possible thing that some craftspeople might consider a challenge would be creating some sort of website from which to sell their craft book. To be frank, with the ease of publishing that some website systems offer, and the alternative of running a craft blog, there really is nothing to stop you.

You might have to learn a few things you don't know at the moment but as a craftsperson, learning is part of what you do pretty much continually so that shouldn't hold you back.

Today, any craftsperson can write and publish a craft book. All you need is an idea. Unlike years gone by when you needed thousands to even get started, today the investment required is tiny. So small that craft book publishing is within the grasp of everyone.

It can provide a serious income too. You might not be the next Dan Brown or JK Rowling but craft book publishing can be a lucrative business.

What people tend to overlook is the additional spin-offs that writing and publishing a craft book can bring. The direct income is important, of course, but don't overlook the other benefits.

Once you've published your first craft book you automatically become an expert in many people's eyes.

For a start, most people don't realize how simple the publishing process is. They still think it's expensive and took years to do. How are they to know you can go from "ordinary" craftsperson to published crafts expert in a matter of a few months?

So being a craft book author gives you a certain standing. It's as if your craft book is going around telling people how good you are.

The first spin-off is that any crafts you make, because they're made by a "published craft expert", are more sought after and, by default, more valuable.

But it doesn't end there.

Many people who write a craft book are invited to speak or demonstrate at shows and fairs. You've probably seen them there yourself. Did you know that at the very least you can expect to get your expenses paid. You might even get a fee. Not bad for doing what you love, is it!

Of course once you start demonstrating, your reputation grows and things can start escalating. People who didn't buy your book will see you demonstrating and then buy a copy. You become someone who's in demand. Demand for your crafts increases as well.

And all the while that craft book you wrote is still going around telling people how good you are. Like I said, it's like having a whole bunch of people working to promote you - except they don't cost anything.

In fact your venture into craft book publishing is probably making you money!

It's all hypothetical of course. Some people aren't interested in demonstrating or speaking in public. I should also say that there's no guarantee of any income. When you write articles like this you have to point that out, because unfortunately there are bound to be a few people who write a craft book and don't put in the work necessary to make it a success.

On the other hand I know those who make six figure incomes from craft book publishing alone. I guess it depends on being prepared to do a bit of work and getting good advice from the start.

Jewelry Making & Beading for Dummies was first published in 2005 and is probably the most popular book available for teaching beginners about the basics of jewelry making and beading.

When the book was published a few years back I had already been making jewelry for quite some time so I wasn't really interested in getting it.

Now that I focus more on teaching jewelry making I am always looking for jewelry making information that can help beginners, so I decided to get the book and review it.

Here is an overview of the contents of the book and my opinion about each section. If you are new to beading and/or jewelry making I hope you will find this useful.

The book is divided into five parts: Part 1: Creating Irresistible Jewelry, Part 2: Discovering Simple Jewelry-Making Techniques, Part 3: Implementing Design Ideas, Trends, and More, Part 4: Building on Your Jewelry Making Hobby, and Part 5: The Part of Tens.

The first part, Creating Irresistible Jewelry, covers from A to Z everything a beginner needs to know about the different strings, chords, and wire options available. There is also a complete explanation of the basic jewelry making tools and the different kinds of connectors (head pins, eye pins, jump rings, etc.) and clasps.

There is also a very comprehensive explanation about bead types, crystal beads, pearls, and stones. A small section is also dedicated to explaining where you can find jewelry making materials both online and offline.

The section finishes with a chapter dedicated to explaining how to best set up your workspace.

So Part 1 of the book is basically a description of "what" whereas Part 2, Discovering Simple Jewelry-Making Techniques, gets into the "how."

Not surprisingly, it starts with stringing and knotting and how to use crimps. The next chapter is dedicated to Bead Weaving and focuses primarily on weaving with seed beads.

I thought it was a little unusual to focus so much on seed beads as there are many beautiful pieces you can make weaving with beads other than seed beads. So I think this chapter could be greatly improved by showing more details in that area, but still it does cover basic weaving patterns.

Part 2 ends with a chapter on wire wrapping which includes how to choose wire, basic wire wrapping techniques, and a nice section on how to use a wire jig.

So Parts 1 and 2 take up about half of the book and really cover everything you need to know as a beginner. I should also mention that there are simple projects spread throughout both sections so that you can practice what you are learning as you go along.

Looking at this from the perspective of a complete beginner, I think Parts 1 and 2 of the book are all you really need.

Part 3 of the book consists primarily of beading projects, and while they are all very nice pieces of jewelry, there are very few graphics showing step by step how to make the pieces. In my experience working with beginners I think many would find it difficult to make these pieces without detailed instructions or hands-on help like a class or video.

So if I were a beginner, I would learn everything in Parts 1 and 2, and put the book on the shelf for a while, and then maybe revisit Part 3 later after I had gained more experience.

Part 4, in my opinion, goes off on a tangent that I don't think has much to do with learning beading and jewelry making.

Things are covered like how to decorate other objects with beads, making jewelry with kids, hosting a jewelry party, and tips for what to do if you want to turn your jewelry making hobby into a business.

I will say that the part about turning your jewelry making hobby into a business has some very good tips, especially on how to correctly price your jewelry. It shows you how to make sure that you include a cost for how long it takes you to make a jewelry piece. Most jewelry makers forget to do this and it leads them to significantly underprice their jewelry.

The final section, Part 5: The Part of Tens is so named because it gives you three chapters of Top Tens. The first top 10 is jewelry suppliers. It is good but a little dated. New suppliers have emerged since the book was published that are better than some listed in the book.

The second top 10 is common jewelry making mistakes to avoid and has very good tips for avoiding mistakes that beginners commonly make.

The third top 10 is ideas for making money selling your jewelry. There are some very good ideas in this section.

Overall, I would recommend this book to beginners as a good resource to get started. But keep in mind that if you're learning style is more suited to learning by seeing things in action then you may have trouble actually learning beading by looking at this book simply because there are not a lot of "how to" graphics.

The book is available at many bookstores and also at Amazon.com.
