Printing Press And Internet
PRINTING PRESS AND INTERNET
The revolution of the printing press and the internet definitely led to a robust revolution and a paradigm shift in access and distribution of information. Unlike in the past days where information was restricted to those who could read and write (scribes), information spread widely and ultimately increasing the literary levels. It also led to a revolution in religion since printing of religious books e.g. the Bible became faster.
Similarly, the internet equipped with electronic mails and search engines has resulted in increased information availability. This has caused an impact of change in businesses, research and academics as well as in our daily lives.
Despite the two revolutions having almost similar attributes, there are some differences between them. The internet or the electronic media is more versatile than the print media. It can perform tasks such as editing, formatting, deleting and customizing the document. The internet allows for consolidation of bulky information in one place through information databases. This has led to reduced bulkiness of paperwork. Additionally the spread of information is faster via internet than through printed material.
Arguilar (2009) remarks that with the current rate of technological improvement and development, it is likely that printed books may become obsolete. There has been a shift in handling information from hardcopies (prints) to softcopies.
The revolution of the printing press and the internet has some negative and positive implications as relate to literacy and knowledge.
The printing press invention led to increased knowledge due to accessibility of learning material thus improving the literacy levels. Similarly the internet led to the same but over-reliance on it has led to a behavioral change in learning. Issues of Plagiarism have increased with the internet since most materials accessible through the net do not cite authorship, source or authority. This has generally undermined the traditional research criteria and procedures.
Personally the internet is advantageous for it has improved communication, search and access of information. It has also reduced the time normally used in olden procedures in the same. Additionally, it is relatively cheap as compared to the print media.
