If you're refilling your ink cartridges, is there a way of knowing how much is left?

I have a HP C5280 printer and i've started to use ink refills instead of purchasing new cartridges...the only problem is the HP toolbox doesn't register that it has been refilled... I've downloaded a free program called Inkmon4 to see if that could keep track of the levels but it's not looking very promising.
