My Kodak 5100 AiO printer keeps flashing check black ink & check color ink. What do I do?

I installed new updates. I checked & did everything the Kodak rep. told me. Still nothing worked. He told me I must have defective cartridges. So, I went to a different store & spent another $25 for 2 more cartridges. I came home & replaced them only to end up with the same result. I highly doubt my luck is THAT bad that I come home with defective cartridges 2 times in a row. I asked him if he was sure I didn't have a defective printer...he told me, "No, it's the cartridges." I have a hard time buying that load of crap since I've replaced them twice with the same result. Any suggestions on what I can do??? I'm needed to print invitations to my rehearsal dinner for my wedding which is 4 weeks from tomorrow...kind of in a time crunch here....THANKS!!!

Actually that's not unheard of. Went to visit my aunt a couple of months ago and she had replaced her ink cartridge with a new one from a 2-pack because her old one was out of ink, but it still didn't print. She thought it had to be something else too, but I checked it and it was bad, stuck in the other cartridge and it worked. Also, my ex called me once about the same problem with a neighbor of hers where they had just put in a new cartridge and it didn't work either. They were hesitant to put in another cartridge too when I told them to and didn't think it'd work, but it worked.

Ink cartridges are very cheaply made and I don't believe have a lot of quality control to make sure they work before selling them. It is very possible that both sets of cartridges are bad, I think the odds are against that actually happening, but still completely possible.

Here are the things I do and check for with inkjet cartridge issues:
- make sure you have the correct cartridges for your printer
- make sure all packing material, tape seals, etc. are removed from the cartridges
- make sure all the surfaces for the electrical contacts for the cartridges are clean & undamaged. There are surfaces on the cartridge itself and inside the hole/slot/port in the carriage that the cartridge sits in. A lot of times ink will get on them and cause problems. I usually wipe them down with a tissue, but be careful not to leave any pieces behind.
- check the ink cartridges for ink at printhead nozzles. This is for the all-in-one (printhead & ink cartridge combo) and not manufacturer recommended, but what I do all the time to test them to make sure ink is at least available and probably working and has never caused any problems. Take a tissue and wipe across the bottom of the printhead a couple of times, and different directions, to see if you get a good set of colored ink streaks on the tissue. If you do, then most likely the cartridge is good and the wiping helps to clean the printhead surface. If no good, strong colors streaks, then the cartridge is definitely bad and should be returned to the store for a refund or replacement (they're used to it, common problem).
- Turn the printer off, re-install cartridges, power printer back on & test. Sometimes this helps the printer kind of reset and recognize the cartridges.
- try another set of ink cartridges (not necessarily from a different store, because those cartridges may have been sitting around for awhile too and have gone bad, though they're not supposed to).

Note: Most printers require that all cartridges need to be working and have ink before it will actually print. The printer may not properly recognize one cartridge being bad from the other, so try mixing and matching the cartridges that you have (the ones that you get color from when wiping the printhead) and see what happens.

If all that fails, then you're down to the probability that the printer is malfunctioning in some way (bad electrical contacts or circuit, wiring, etc.) and would need to be repaired or replaced. Of course the manufacturer rep will most likely continue to refuse to accept that the printer is at fault since they know the ink cartridges are so poorly made and are often the root cause of most printing problems, but if you've tried everything else that I've listed, then don't take NO for an answer, and get them to repair or replace your printer if it’s still under warranty. If you've purchased it recently enough, you may be able to take it back to the store from which you bought it for a refund or replacement.

To get the best class photos you should use photo paper- the output will be improved. If you are a writer, you will require your PC and as mentioned the suitable applications and your printer. You should use elevated quality paper in standard and/or specialty larger sizes depending on the size of the book. If you are going to plan your own cover you need high-quality card stock paper. You will require a hot glue gun for binding your book.

Another fun project to do with your Lexmark cartridges and your PC is making your own family cookbook. You will want to get a variety of colors of printer paper, for example if it’s a Thanksgiving cookbook, you might choose autumn colors. Gather your preferred families recipes together and giving credit to the person who submitted them print them up on recipe cards you create with your pc and printer. You can also print them up on standard paper and put them in a decorated binder. You will require the following your pc and printer, assorted colored paper, laminating paper, a three-hole punch, bonding agent reinforcements, and a glue stick. The paper should be acid free because it will lessen the yellowing and aging of the paper. You will also need a one-inch hard enclosed binder. A digital camera is not obligatory but if you want to get hold of pictures of the dishes you have hiacknowledged it would surely help. The greater the pixels the better the capability of the camera. One with a memory card is most excellent.
